English

The smart lock market has matured significantly, moving from a novelty for early adopters to a mainstream category with strong competition between premium brands (August/Amazon, Schlage, Yale) and more affordable, high-performing alternatives (eufy, Kwikset, Sesame, and various no-hub options). The category is driven by convenience (keyless entry, remote access, auto-lock), security (audit logs, temporary codes, integration with cameras/alarms), and smart home integration. Most content available to consumers is either thinly veiled manufacturer marketing that overstates features and understates long-term reliability issues and total cost of ownership, or shallow affiliate listicles that provide little genuine comparative value or long-term testing data. There is a substantial opportunity for independent, practical, long-term testing that examines real installation difficulty on different door types and ages (especially older homes and rentals where drilling or permanent modifications are not allowed), long-term hardware reliability and security after 2-3 years (motor wear, deadbolt alignment issues, app support, vulnerabilities), actual smart home integration quality (especially robust Matter and local control via Home Assistant versus cloud-only operation), battery life in real conditions, and true value versus marketing claims. Wirecutter, CNET, PCMag, and WIRED produce better-than-average reviews, but even they have limited coverage of multi-year durability, real installation on old/rental doors, and advanced local control performance.
