Smart air purifiers

The air purifier market has grown substantially in recent years due to increasing awareness of indoor air quality, wildfire smoke events, allergies, and post-pandemic health concerns. The category ranges from small room units to whole-home systems, with major players including Dyson, Blueair, Coway, Levoit, Winix, and various smart models from big tech companies. Most content available to consumers is either thinly veiled manufacturer marketing that overstates performance and understates long-term filter and maintenance costs, or shallow affiliate listicles that provide little genuine comparative value or long-term testing data. There is a significant opportunity for independent, practical, long-term testing that examines real CADR performance on different pollutants (especially wildfire smoke and VOCs), actual noise levels in bedrooms at night, long-term filter replacement costs and maintenance burden, data accuracy of built-in air quality sensors over time, and the quality of smart home integration — particularly robust local control via Home Assistant or Matter versus cloud-only operation. Wirecutter's testing stands out as some of the best current content, but even they have limited coverage of long-term total cost of ownership and advanced local control options.
